Professional Development for Faculty Teaching Effectiveness

Clemson Online offers a wide array of courses, workshops, and trainings to help Clemson instructors at all levels document evidence of teaching effectiveness for annual reviews and TPR considerations.

We provide opportunities in several areas listed in the Office of Faculty Advancement's "Collection of Best Practices for Measuring Teaching Effectiveness" (via CAFLS), including Recognition for Teaching Excellence through our Quality Matters review program.

COFFEE Series

Clemson Online Furthering Faculty Education and E-learning

The COFFEE series is Clemson Online's signature faculty development program. Ranging from the basics of accessing Canvas to more advanced pedagogy and technical skills, the eight courses below can help you demonstrate the following measures of teaching effectiveness:

  • Incorporation of new knowledge and unique teaching techniques into courses, labs, etc.
  • Participation in professional development related to improving teaching skills or methods.
  • Teaching innovation and curriculum development (Faculty Success tab).

COFFEE courses are all self-paced and facilitated by experienced Digital Learning Strategists. For any questions about the series, email COFFEES@clemson.edu.

COFFEE Prime

Estimated time to complete: 12-15 hours

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Design and develop courses using Canvas and other online instructional tools.
  2. Apply effective practices, including accessibility, for online teaching in both synchronous and asynchronous modalities.
  3. Plan and design several Canvas elements, such as Pages and Modules, for your future courses.
  4. Outline and create an introduction video for a future course.

Artifacts:

  • Canvas sandbox site with draft assignment, announcements, home page, and more
  • Instructor introduction video
  • Student engagement strategy

COFFEE: Video & Visual

Estimated time to complete: 10 hours

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Identify and apply appropriate visual design principles to enhance clarity, organization, and learner cognition.
  2. Develop and practice skills using available tools for visual design in Canvas.
  3. Apply effective practices for creating slide presentations, videos, and other visual elements.
  4. Select appropriate editing tools and practice adding simple effects to a video.

  • Narrated slide presentation
  • Self-created and edited short video
  • Visually effective content page

COFFEE: Accessibility 1

Estimated time to complete: 2 hours

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Identify regulations related to online course accessibility at Clemson.
  2. Locate tools to enhance accessibility in Canvas.

Artifact:

  • 80% grade or higher on course quiz

COFFEE: Accessibility 2

Estimated time to complete: 8-10 hours

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Identify concerns about accessibility and learners with disabilities.
  2. Identify and apply best practices for accessible learning in course assignments.
  3. Practice creating accessible documents and media.
  4. Develop a pedagogical approach which incorporates accessibility as a priority.

  • Accessible document
  • Captioned video
  • Reflection response on course accessibility

COFFEE: Responsible AI

Estimated time to complete: 16-21 hours

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Describe Generative AI (GAI).
  2. Evaluate and discuss the ethical implications of Generative AI in education.
  3. Integrate AI tools into teaching Practices.
  4. Identify challenges and benefits of AI in the classroom.

Artifacts:

  • AI policy for your classroom, co-designed with peers and facilitators
  • Draft version of an AI assisted assignment
  • Draft version of an AI resistant assignment

COFFEE: Basics 1

Estimated time to complete: 2-4 hours

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify necessary technology for using Canvas effectively.
  2. Select appropriate roles and organizing options within a Canvas course site.
  3. Test a variety of Canvas tools and elements. 

Artifacts:

  • Canvas sandbox organized according to course instructions
  • Reflection response

COFFEE: Basics 2

Estimated time to complete: 2-4 hours

Learning Objectives:

  1. Create a variety of elements within Canvas sandbox.
  2. Identify effective methods for presenting information within Canvas.

  • At least one Module

COFFEE: House Blend

Estimated time to complete: 10 hours

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Develop and practice skills using Canvas for course design & development.
  2. Identify and apply effective practices for face-to-face (F2F) teaching that incorporates Canvas.
  3. Plan and design several Canvas elements for your course.

Artifacts:

  • Canvas course site elements designed for effective use with a F2F course
  • At least one active learning activity

Quality Matters Reviews (QM)

Online Course Quality Assurance Program

The QM course certification program is an internationally-recognized mark of quality for synchronous, asynchronous, and hybrid online courses. Clemson Online offers internal course reviews, external reviews (for official QM certification), an annual QM Cohort program, and several QM and QM-related workshops for instructors at Clemson.

Clemson Online's QM offerings can help you demonstrate the following measures of teaching effectiveness:

  • Incorporation of new knowledge and unique teaching techniques into courses, labs, etc.
  • Participation in professional development related to improving teaching skills or methods.
  • Teaching innovation and curriculum development (Faculty Success tab).
  • Recognition for teaching excellence.
  • Service to the teaching profession (if you become a certified faculty peer reviewer for QM course reviews).
  • Development of new course or modality change to online (BYCC only).

Building Your Canvas Course (BYCC)

Estimated time to complete: 7-8 contact hours, plus homework

Learning Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate alignment between learning objectives and major course components.
  2. Create a home page for their Canvas course.
  3. Describe plans for engaging learners in active learning.
  4. Create Canvas modules for organizing course content.

Improving Your Online Course (IYOC)

Estimated time to complete: 8-10 hours

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Identify the origin and scope of Quality Matters.
  2. Apply the essential Specific Review Standards of the Quality Matters Rubric to your own online course.
  3. Describe the alignment of at least one module/unit in your online course.
  4. Prioritize improvements to your online course.

Artifacts:

  • Self-review of course against QM Rubric Essential Standards
  • Course improvement plan

QM Internal Review

Estimated time to complete: 20 weeks (includes review period and revision period)

Review Outcomes:

  1. Specific, measurable recommendations for improving course design.
  2. Strengthened alignment among learning objectives (course and unit), assessments, tools, instructional materials, and learning activities.
  3. Improvements based on feedback from peer reviewers, in areas such as: accessibility, learner engagement, and student support.

Note: Clemson Online requires a course to proceed through an internal review successfully before being submitted for an external certification review.

Estimated time to complete: Academic year (Aug-May)

Program Outcomes:

  1. Completion of Applying the QM Rubric (APPQMR) workshop
  2. Internal review of selected course
  3. One-on-one help with course revisions
  4. $500 stipend and peer reviewer opportunity

Estimated time to complete: 20 weeks (includes review period and revision period)

Review Outcomes: 

  1. Course improvements based on feedback from peer reviewers, in areas such as: accessibility, assessments, and student support.
  2. Specific, measurable recommendations for improving course design.
  3. Strengthened alignment among learning objectives (course and unit), assessments, tools, instructional materials, and learning activities.
  4. Official QM certification and badge for use in your Canvas site.

Note: Clemson Online requires a course to proceed through an internal review successfully before being submitted for an external certification review.

Non-Credit Course Development and CO Events

Clemson Online also supports non-credit course development and a wide variety of workshops and presentations which can help you demonstrate the following measures of teaching effectiveness:

  • Incorporation of new knowledge and unique teaching techniques into courses, labs, etc.
  • Participation in professional development related to improving teaching skills or methods.
  • Teaching innovation and curriculum development (Faculty Success tab).
  • Development of new course or modality change to online.

Non-Credit Online Course

Estimated time to complete: 3-6 months

Development Outcomes:

  1. Disseminate your research and content to participants statewide and beyond (i.e., those without Clemson email, and/or those beyond the campus community).
  2. Fulfill societal impact with grant requirements.
  3. Partner with our Instructional Designers and Digital Learning Designers to create a unique, high-quality online course in Canvas.

Artifacts:

  • Well-developed, high-quality, accessible online course available to participants statewide and beyond.
