Profile
Marisa Zimmerman has been a Ph.D. student in the FEC department's Elmore lab since the Spring semester of 2024. Marisa's current work examines how habitat characteristics, management practices, and other relevant variables relate to grassland bird communities in the Southeast U.S. using datasets from The National Bobwhite and Grassland Initiative (NBGI) Coordinated Implementation Program (CIP) and examines novel ARU methodologies in the field and analysis.
Research Interests
Marisa's research interests broadly focus on birds, behavior, and environmental conservation. She is interested in hands-on conservation methods, such as aiding in prescribed burns and outreach programs and researching best wildlife management practices. In the past, she has done research on Florida Sandhill Crane habitat use in an urban environment, Sandhill and Whooping Crane rearing behaviors and other research with the International Crane Foundation (ICF) in Wisconsin, and changes in wintering passerine population metrics at wetland sites in Oregon. Smaller projects she's worked on include helping research wolf-dog hybrid temperaments, measuring and analyzing sound data of bird alarm calls, assessing biodiversity in Florida-Friendly ponds, creating a GIS tool to view and analyze long-term monitoring data, and various GIS projects.
