W-4 and Tax Information
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued a new federal W-4 for the 2024 tax year. Access the IRS W-4 form (PDF).
The new federal W-4, designed in alignment with the 2018 tax reform bill (The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act), no longer uses withholding allowances. The IRS developed Frequently Asked Questions regarding the Federal W-4 process change from 2020.
Special note: The state of South Carolina has also issued a new tax chart and a new SC W-4. Access the SC W-4 Form (PDF).

What this means for you
You are encouraged to reassess your tax situation and submit a new federal W-4 for the 2024 tax year. You are not required to submit a new federal Form W-4. If you do not furnish a new federal Form W-4, your tax withholding will continue based on the information on your existing federal W-4; however, the withholding will be based on the new 2024 federal tax chart, which means actual federal tax withheld may change. Note that special rules apply to federal Forms W-4 claiming exemption from withholding.
The IRS has developed a Withholding Estimator to help you estimate your 2024 tax liability. View the quick reference guide below for step-by-step instructions on how to fill out the Withholding Estimator using information from your Clemson University paystub.
Use the button below to access the quick reference guide for using the IRS Withholding Estimator. At the end of the IRS Withholding Estimator, you may be prompted to download and print a pre-filled federal W-4. Instead of manually submitting the pre-filled federal W-4, you should submit any changes online using the “Begin New Federal W-4” button below.
Note: If you use an ITIN to file, make sure it has not expired. Visit IRS.gov/ITIN for more information.
You may complete and submit a new federal Form W-4 online through the HR Self-Service portal. Use the button below to get started.
Beyond utilizing these tools, you might also consider seeking advice from a tax accountant.
Information for nonresident aliens
When completing your Form W-4, please note the following:

- Step 2 (Multiple Jobs or Spouse Works) does not apply to nonresident aliens for tax purposes.
- Nonresident aliens may not claim exemption from withholding.
For filing instructions, refer to IRS Notice 1392 (PDF), Supplemental Form W-4 Instructions for Nonresident Aliens.
