Current Students Transferring Credits
To take a course from another college or university as a current Clemson student, start by checking the Transfer Equivalency List to see which classes you can take to fulfill your Clemson degree requirements.
Transferring Credits from Other Schools
Before registering for outside courses — domestic or abroad — you must receive approval in advance to ensure that all credits can be transferred.
To get credit for the outside courses you take, you must meet the following criteria:
- Earn a final grade of C or higher.
- Provide a transcript for proof that you have completed the class at a satisfactory level.
Credits from other schools are not reflected in your Clemson GPA.
Exemption Credit or Waiver from Other Schools
As a Clemson transfer student, you can request that the University grant exemptions from previous institutions you have attended. However, you must provide your official transcript proving that you have successfully completed the requirements to receive credit.
If you're unsure of whether Clemson University can grant your credit or course waiver, we encourage you to reach out to your major advisor or department chair, or review the Transfer Credit Equivalency List (TCEL) to ensure the transferability of the course and for more insight before taking the next steps.
Course Substitutions
At Clemson University, we recognize that your unique learning journey may require special accommodations. If you are struggling in a particular course or are in the process of getting transfer credits approved from another institution, you can request to substitute a course with an alternative course or assignment.
How to Request a Substitution
Request a course substitution in iROAR by simply logging into your account and going to > Student Self-Service > Student Records > Request Substitution for an Academic Requirement.

Submit your course substitution request as soon as possible to ensure that you graduate on time; some colleges do not consider requests in the last semester, so you should plan accordingly to fulfill your program requirements before you plan to graduate.
New Student Credits
Whether you're a transfer student with college credit from a previous college or university, or a freshman with credits from your high school AP or IB program, you can request that Clemson evaluate your credits so you can stay on track to graduate in your desired timeframe.
